Making the decision to tackle your addiction to alcohol is arguably one of the most important decisions that you will make in your life. Unfortunately, there are many people who mistakenly believe that overcoming alcohol addiction is as simple as just putting the bottle down. The reality is that there is a psychological and physical aspect to addiction that you will need to go through in order to establish and maintain your sobriety.

The first step in the recovery program for many people is detox. This is often something that is overlooked or it’s something that a person may feel that they can manage on their own. The reality is that when you’re ready to work through detox, you should always be under the care of a trained medical professional in a structured setting.
What is Alcohol Detox Like?
One of the dangers of alcohol detox is the fact that it’s impossible to tell what type of withdrawal symptoms you will experience or to what extent. You can take comfort in the fact of knowing that when you commit to an alcohol detox program at one of the partnered detox locations, you have the peace of mind of knowing that a treatment team will be available to you around the clock which ensures that you’re never put in a potentially dangerous position.
How Long Does Detox Last?
In most cases, a person will need to spend at least seven days in alcohol detox. It’s critical that you reach out to our intake team as soon you make the decision to overcome your addiction so that we can work quickly to get a plan for not only rehab but detox in place. The reason for this is that you will likely begin to experience withdrawal symptoms within just a few hours from the time that you take your last drink. Although withdrawal symptoms can start off on the mild side, they will quickly grow in severity.
What to Expect During Alcohol Detox?
There are several withdrawal symptoms that you may experience during the first few days of your time in alcohol detox. Some examples include:
- Shakiness
- Nausea
- Cravings
- Sweating
- Depression
- Anxiety
You will start to feel the height of your withdrawal symptoms anywhere between the first and the third day of your time in alcohol detox. While any one of these symptoms can make you feel physically and psychologically drained, a combination of these symptoms could be potentially deadly which is why it’s never recommended that you try to work through detox on your own. Toward the end of your week in detox, you will start to feel more like yourself which will put you in a better frame of mind to focus on the next steps in your recovery journey.
What Happens After Alcohol Detox?
It’s crucial to remember that alcohol detox is only the first step in your recovery journey. It’s not enough to remove the immediate impact of alcohol. Instead, you have to continue with your treatment and determine and heal from the root cause of your addiction. This is where alcohol rehab comes into play. You will have the option to work through a partial hospitalization program or one of our two outpatient programs. Clients that decide to commit to a PHP rehab in Eatontown will spend approximately 25 hours per week in therapy and be able to live in one of our incredible single-family residences located nearby the Fort Lauderdale beach. You will have the comfort of knowing that you have around-the-clock access to your treatment team which can help you through the difficult times that you may experience during the course of your recovery.
If you have personal or professional responsibilities, you may find it impossible to commit to a partial hospitalization program. That doesn’t mean, however, that you won’t be able to work through a recovery program. Through our intensive outpatient program or our general outpatient program, you can still receive the help and care that you need without jeopardizing these other important responsibilities in your life. Clients that opt to work through an intensive outpatient program will need to complete a minimum of nine hours of therapy per week whereas clients that commit to a general outpatient program will need to complete at least four hours of therapy per week.
It goes without saying that the bulk of your time in any treatment program will be spent participating in different forms of therapy which will help you to address the root cause of your addiction. Determining the root cause of your addiction is a key factor in your overall recovery because you will be able to work through the trigger points in your life that may have been contributing factors to your addiction. Not only that, but you will have help in putting a plan in place where you will not fall back into the trap of addiction going forward.
There are many different types of therapy that you will experience during your time in treatment. Some examples include:
- Behavioral therapy
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- Trauma-based therapy
It’s not uncommon for a person that has an alcohol addiction to also experience issues in maintaining relationships with their family. If you find yourself in this position, you will also have the opportunity to take advantage of family therapy which can help you to regrow and redevelop the relationship that you have with your family members. Each therapy session takes place in a neutral environment to ensure that everyone feels comfortable.
